30 Minutes or Less
Jesse Eisenberg was in The Social Network. This is a fact. It is also a fact that The Social Network was my favourite film of the last few years, so it stands to reason that I should have seen 30 Minutes or Less as a real treat. And I did because the trailer is hilarious. Seriously, if you want a very funny three minutes then watch the trailer on YouTube because the real film is thirty times longer and there are approximately two funny moments in the film that aren’t in the trailer.
The problem with 30 Minutes or Less is timeless and it’s the reason that Your Highness was greeted with such a barrage of abuse earlier this year. IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO AN ACTION/COMEDY, THE ACTION NEEDS TO BE IRONIC. There. Got it out of my system. But it seems that the Hollywood bigwigs, who have greenlighted Transformers 4: Square Root of One, think that comedy cannot make big bucks on its own so add in an obnoxious amount of explosions and car chases. Personally, I blame Ben Stiller because if Tropic Thunder had been just a fraction worse, this would never have gotten so out of hand.
But the problem isn’t the car chases or the actors (Aziz Ansari and Nick Swardson are particularly bright as the sidekicks) it’s just the dearth of truly funny material. The plot is simple and (potentially) funny; nerdy kid has bomb strapped to his chest and is told to rob a bank. But the script, which is an action movie with laughs, rather than a comedy with occasional bits of fire, shamelessly squanders that potential. Instead we have bag loads of dead weight jokes, pointless characters and plotting that’s more inexplicable than Glen Rice’s attraction to Sarah Palin.
Not the movie that it looked like it was going to be. Another disc for the inevitable ‘Tropic Thunder/Your Highness/30 Minutes of Less’ box-set.
