Cool Blogs: Your Turn Heather
In this series I will explore the (non-obligatory) alternatives to The Clapper Bored, the best of the best when it comes to movie blogs.
The third site in our series is undoubtedly one of the most popular and most sweariest on the inter-webs, Your Turn Heather. Run by journalist extraordinaire Limara Salt, the site is an (almost) daily dissection of all things movie related; ranging from reviews to rants to pictures of kittens. What’s for sure is that if you’re looking for a funny, personal film blog there are few options that can quite stack up against the Gonzo might of Your Turn Heather.
When did you write your very first film review?
I used to be a Kids Club member with Picturehouse cinemas and I won a competition to go to the Super Mario Bros. premiere and review the film for the newsletter. I was 8 years old so that makes me the youngest film reviewer ever, right? It was very exciting, but I honestly have no idea what I thought of it at the time and what I actually said. I probably said “I like the bit with Luigi” in several different ways.
What’s the best film related freebie you’ve received?
I’m the worst person to ask that question as I’ve never got anything apart from the Harry Potter 3D glasses and a load of Cars 2 stuff, but the best things are probably my Attack The Block hoody and Love It! foam finger . I asked for those so I should probably be more shameless.
How did you come upon your internet moniker and would you change it with hindsight?
No idea. Like most bloggers I didn’t actually think anyone would read my nonsensical ramblings so I didn’t put too much thought into the title. I knew I wanted it to be a reference to a film I love and I didn’t want it to be a lazy pun on something to film, like ‘reel’ instead of ‘real’, and I just ended up with Your Turn Heather. People always think my name is Heather so maybe it wasn’t the brightest blog title but I’d never change it because I’m too lazy to do some lightweight re-branding.
What’s the most exciting thing you’ve written for your blog?
I don’t know if I’d ever say ‘exciting’ since I usually write my blog in my nightdress while eating Hula Hoops for breakfast but there have been a few posts that stick out for me. I did a post to celebrate the fact that I’d been devaluing film criticism on the blog for a year (which is much sadder than a child throwing a birthday party for their gerbil) and it was just nice to look back on all the posts and seeing the ones people responded to. Apart from that, my first Die Hard nerdgasm was a great one to write because it was the first time I really realised how a great film can continue to affect and surprise you with its brilliance despite having seen it 4 million times.
What are some other ‘Cool Blogs’?
I’d never call them, or indeed myself, ‘cool’ but I can tell you the ones I read everyday. As far as film blogs are concerned it’s the usual suspects: Ultra Culture is always the one I read and wished I thought of it first; Clothes On Film covers an area of film that no other blog does; The Shiznit is hilarious; and The Incredible Suit somehow convinced me to watch a Bond film every month for a year so he deserves a mention, I guess. Away from film, I’m completely obsessed with a celebrity blog called Dlisted.com which, somehow, contains more swearing and innuendo than
Your Turn Heather and I love street style blogs like The Sartorialist and Style Sightings. I spend way too much time every morning scoping various blogs.
If you could make up one really good question to be asked, what would that be?
“Would you like to be flown to New York to interview Martin Scorsese?” or “Since you’re actually a journalist with a degree and everything, how would you like to be paid to bless our successful and internationally renowned publication with your wondrous words?”
